How to Endure after Losing a Pet
Losing a pet is never easy, simple, or even bearable. Grief over pet loss can be devastating. At Equipaws, we have had to say our final goodbyes to our own pets as well as those of our clients over the years- weâre always so grateful when our clients include us in their petsâ last moments.
It doesnât get easier. But you donât have to go it alone and there are ways to help you cope with the loss of a pet. While some may be quick to say, âIt was just a dog,â we know thatâs not true. Pets are family, dear companions who have been there with you through good times and bad and who have loved you through it all. We all feel the loss of our pets deeply.Â
Consider These Coping Strategies after Pet Loss
If youâve recently lost a pet, whether sudden or expected, consider these 5 coping strategies to help you through this difficult time.
- Acknowledge your grief and give yourself permission to express it.
- Try not to replay your final moments together but instead focus on your favorite memories with them.
- Memorialize your pet through a bereavement ritual: plant a tree, create a memory box, commission a painting, share photos and memories, or spread your petâs ashes somewhere meaningful to you.
- Reach out to pet grief counselors, and virtual pet loss support groups like the Humane Society of Broward County, Pet Compassion Careline, and Lap of Love, which are national organizations.
If you have recently lost a pet, the main thing is to know you are not alone. Pets are near and dear to our hearts and true members of our families. At Equipaws, we are here for you if you need us during these trying times.Â
Take the time you need to grieve in the way that you need. And you will know when youâre ready to talk about it, spend time with pets, or welcome a new pet into your home. Sending you big hugs.Â
